But power corrupts and Oliver is pretty corrupted so first I have to pull this
engine. The stupid car hasn't even been cleaned after Maniwaki and it's an
unheated garage in Quebec so there is packed ice in the subframe from crashing
into snowbanks. All of that is melting slowly as we heat the garage with wood
burning in a cast iron woodstove.

Garage Work: Hoist
Oliver's garage has an I-Beam going across the bay to hold up the
loft above. Here I'm clearancing the joists for an I-beam trolly.
The Trolly is visible to the right. I patched the notches with some
joist hangers.

Push workbenches
Steve and I push workbenches around cause Oliver is too lazy.

The Mess
I put this engine in two years before and it doesn't have a lot of miles.
Note the wonderful Zenith copy of the SU carb.

Jim under the Datsun 510
This is where I spend my time in Canada in the winter: lying on a
concrete floor. The morons at Datsun who ripped off the design of this car
from BMW were too cheap to put an output flange on the tranny. Instead they
splined the driveshaft and stuck it inside the tranny. So when you pull the
driveshaft, all the gear oil leaks out. Nice one, guys.

Host set up
The hoist is set up and the engine and tranny mounts get pulled.

Pull Engine
Champa pulls the hoist chain, I guide the engine tilter. By the way, don't get
the cheap engine tilter sold by Northern, the threads are junk and this one failed
during the pull.

Victory
Note that both the engine and tranny come out as one unit, it's a lot
easier than pulling the tranny from under the car. That's a 5 speed
racing pattern (1st dogleg) transmission. This also has a good view
of the chain hoist and trolly which rides on the I-beam. Oh yeah, that's
a lobster on a telephone on my t-shirt.

Useless
Now the car is useless and Oliver can't use it to get hurt or killed.
That's probably a good thing.
